I just bragged myself cheap tickets to Joshua Bell's Bruch Violin Concerto concert in April at the Cadogan Hall in London!
I've seen him performing it on Youtube (lol) and have only been dreaming that one day I'll be able to see him play it live. And voila!! Luck is on my side this year! (I've noticed how lots and lots of bands are all coming to London around these months, including classical instrumentalists, modern musicians, and all those indie bands, hip hop groups out there that are actually good. I've book myself quite a lot of these concerts already, hurting my wallet and oh my gosh will they be good :D)
Anyways, here's nice picture of Joshua Bell and a nice full recording on the beautiful piece!
I always thought Joshua Bell was a bit messy with the 1st/3rd movements but it may be that it's the kind of piece that lets you be a bit less technical and a bit more expressive. Even so, I prefer Kyung Wha Chung's (or Perlman's) versions; their bowing is neater, lighter and I think they use vibrato more sparingly to better effect. I love these music posts, Jing. :)
ReplyDeletehe's definitely very messy, but i think so are all his other concertos like wieniawski and brahms. Perlman is ultimately my fav, so he is way up there in the sky, but i think Joshua Bell's sound is also extremely unique, as in he weighs expression more than technique, which is a refreshing change. I'm not sure whether he just lacks the experience technically or he just prefers that style of playing though! xx
